Bio & CV

Professor Susanna Lucia Lamaina, a fine art photographer whose work has been published in numerous catalogs and is held in private collections, graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA), and San Francisco State University, (MA). She studied and collaborated with noted Farm Security Administration photographer, John Collier, Jr., and California photographer, Pirkle Jones.

A respected educator, Susanna was awarded “Teaching in Excellence” in 2003 from the University of California, Santa Cruz extension program for her dedication to teaching.

Her fine art portraiture work has led her to photograph the Italian film director, artist, actor and screenwriter, Mimmo Calopresti. A photograph from the series of Mimmo Calopresti made in 2003 was published in the 2004 61st International Venice Film Festival catalog. In addition, she has photographed political activist’s Angela Davis, John Sinclair, Black Panther party member’s David Hilliard and Ericka Huggins, as well as musicians, Odetta, Sean Lennon and Patti Smith.

In 2008 her photographs were featured in two Italian newspapers, Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica. Her most recent social documentary project on her family village in the south of Italy, “Garaguso, il mio paese in Basilicata” has been featured on "Voice of America."

Susanna’s classes overlap many artistic disciplines, offering a unique diverse structure to studying photography. She has been teaching international students for 27 years. She exhibits her work nationally and internationally.

She has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute, University of California, Santa Cruz Art and Design extension program, The Palo Alto Art Center, The Walnut Creek Civic Arts Program, San Francisco Center for the Book and at Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy.
